Even with fluoride usage, about 50% of children still get cavities. This is because fluoride is mostly effective on the smooth sides of children's teeth, but not as effective on the rough chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars), which is where 66% of the cavities occur. The best protection against cavities of this type is to have sealants applied.
Sealants are clear thin plastic coatings that are painlessly applied to your child's teeth, creating a barrier against the bacteria that cause decay. The best time for your children to get sealants is around the age of 5 or 6, when their first permanent molars begin to erupt. Sealants can last seven years or more with proper maintenance, and are inexpensive.
NOTE: We highly recommend sealants for adult teeth, as well!!
